The history of the Pisgah Cemetery extends well before the formation of Pisgah Memorial Society. Originally associated with the Pisgah United Methodist Church, the oldest part of the cemetery lies in the left rear area of grounds, behind the foundation of the original church. (The original church was a wooden structure that burned in the 1940's.) Graves in this area date to the 1800's, with several veterans of the civil war interred within it's boundaries.
The Pisgah Memorial Society, Inc. was established in March 1944 by a group of interested persons with the purpose: "To engage in the business of establishing, maintaining and conducting a public cemetery and burial ground for the Pisgah community in Clinton District, Monongalia County, West Virginia".
Lots within the grounds of the cemetery are owned by the relatives of the deceased. Pisgah Memorial Society, Inc. does not "own" any part of the cemetery, the group was formed to maintain the original church burial grounds and the adjacent area that is known collectively as Pisgah Cemetery.
Today, the cemetery is 7.3 acres in size and contains over 2,500 interrments. Thanks to donations from relatives of those buried in our cemetery, and friends of the organization, Pisgah Cemetery is well maintained and is an inviting place to visit.
Each and every person having any relative by blood or marriage, buried, or hereafter buried, in the cemetery is automatically a member
of the Pisgah Memorial Society.
The organization relies strictly on donations for the upkeep and maintenance of the lots located in the cemetery.
We are NOT a perpetual care cemetery.
The Pisgah Memorial Society, Inc consists of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and five (5) Board of Directors. None of the officers receive any payment for their time or service while in office. The Secretary is reimbursed for the costs incurred.
Yearly meeting are held on the Sunday prior to Memorial Day in May.
